Stone Town, Zanzibar:
I began my adventure in Stone Town, staying at the historic Tembo House. This charming hotel offered a perfect location, allowing me to explore the footsteps of the legendary Freddie Mercury, who once called this place home.
Immerse yourself in the local culture by embarking on a spice tour, where you'll discover Zanzibar's aromatic treasures. As I strolled through the narrow streets, the intricate doors of the local shops caught my attention, and I couldn't resist purchasing a unique piece from a talented local artist. To delve into the region's history, I visited the East African slave trade exhibition, providing a somber but educational experience. Don't miss the culinary delights at Forodhani Market, where I indulged in a Swahili food tour.
A ferry ride to Changu Island, also known as Prison Island, introduced me to a fascinating tortoise sanctuary inhabited by rare giants that can live up to a century.
Safari Adventure with Zanzibar Private Tours:
For a truly immersive wildlife experience, I booked a two-night, three-day safari with Zanzibar Private Tours. This highly recommended tour company provided personalized and cost-efficient services. During the dry season, we ventured to Mikumi National Park on the Tanzanian mainland. Observing animals gathered around the watering hole with Mount Kilimanjaro in the background was a mesmerizing sight that kept us captivated for hours.
From witnessing a lion hunt a herd of wildebeest to encountering a mischievous monkey attempting to snatch our belongings and also trying to save a water buffalo that was dying from dehydration, every moment was filled with awe and excitement. Staying overnight in the park, I awakened to a breathtaking sight - the graceful presence of a giraffe grazing alongside playful monkeys just beyond my shower window.
Learning about their cultural practices, including the significance of the circumcision ceremony, was a fascinating insight. If you plan to bring them a gift, a custom sword or knife is appreciated.
Beach Bliss in Paje, Zanzibar:
After an exhilarating safari, it was time to relax on the pristine beaches of Paje. I checked into Aluna Paje hotel, which offered a tranquil ambiance and excellent amenities such as a sundeck with a pool, a bar, and a rooftop terrace where indulging in a massage was pure bliss. To make the most of the coastal paradise, I engaged in thrilling water excursions arranged by Aquaholics Zanzibar. Whether it was a Dinges Donut tour, stand-up paddle boarding, surfing, or kite surfing, the crystal-clear waters provided endless enjoyment. Low tide offered a unique opportunity to walk far out into the sea and explore the marine wonders while snorkeling.
Additionally, a visit to Jozani Forest allowed me to encounter the fascinating Red Colobus Monkeys, and exploring Kuza Cave unveiled the mysterious beauty hidden beneath the island's surface. For dining recommendations, Delight and Oxygen were my go-to beachside restaurants, offering spectacular views and delightful cuisine. Mr. Kahawa Cafe Restaurant stole my heart with its organic fare and relaxing ambiance, making it the perfect spot for breakfast and lunch. A popular tourist restaurant not to miss is The Rock, which you need to take a boat to during high tide.
Day Trip to Kendwa's Pristine Beaches:
To complete my Tanzanian journey, I couldn't resist booking a day trip to the picturesque beaches of Kendwa. This area, though more touristy, offers a range of upscale resorts with private beaches. My top recommendation is
